What to do on Sant Joan’s night

Fiesta San Juan Roses Costa Brava

The night of the fire, and even the night of the witches. Different names for the same night, the same party … If everyone seems to agree on something regarding the Fiesta de San Juan it is in the magic that is breathed in towns and cities of Catalonia that night, that of the 23rd June, around the fire. A warmth that twins young and old around this festival of pagan origin that says goodbye to spring to welcome summer. Therefore, today we wanted to dedicate this space to propose some ideas to do the night of San Juan.

San Juan’s bonfires

The purifying fire that heals everything on the shortest night of the year. Music and firecrackers of all colors and measures converge in a festivity that fills the streets and squares with joy and fun until late at night. The protagonists are the dozens of fires that, according to tradition, must be lit with the Canigó Flame; the flame that many carriers descend from the top of the Canigó mountain to take it to more than 350 municipalities as a clear symbol of the unity of Catalan culture.

This tradition, inspired by an epic poem by Jacint Verdaguer. The beaches and streets along the Costa Brava also fill with light and color.

San Juan in Palamós

One of the places where the night of San Juan is lived with more passion and enthusiasm, is in Palamós, which celebrates its Fiesta Mayor. A traditional verbena has been organized, with the expected bonfire and a popular dinner, as well as concerts and, for the first time in recent years, a circus show, a night gymnast and a castellera exhibition.

San Juan in Roses

Another of the great municipalities that celebrate the verbena of San Juan all over the place and, that if you have the occasion, you should not miss, is Roses, with its most anticipated show, the traditional fireworks. Followed by thousands of people on the beach or on the many terraces of the promenade, in recent years it has become an unavoidable event for both residents of the municipality and tourists who do not want to miss this impressive show, ideal to enjoy and share With family or friends.

Other important cities where to spend the night

Girona and Figueres have also become in recent years a meeting point for young and old thanks to the traditional arrival of the Flame del Canigó, the ‘Cercaviles’ (street streets) and the expected music concerts for all audiences.

But if what you want is a somewhat quieter plan, there are many options that move away from the typical celebration that takes place in most towns, coca and firecrackers, fire and dancing. We always have the option of living this magical night in places of beauty of the Far de Sant Sebastià, in Llafranc, or even getting lost in any corner of Cap de Creus to contemplate the majesty of the sunrise. A good place can be the magnificent Benedictine monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, located high in the Sierra de Rodes and from where you get extraordinary views of Port de la Selva, beautiful and lively town that is well worth a visit.

What is clear is that the difficult thing, on a night like this, will be decided by which plan to choose. A simple walk through the streets of any town on the Costa Brava will take us to one of the most anticipated parties of the season.

Coca and cava, music and dance … but above all the fire (bonfires, correfocs, firecrackers and pyrotechnics shows), will be the best companion of fatigue on the shortest night of the year. You have to take advantage of it.
